Lions and hyenas have a long history of conflict in the wild. Hyenas and lions frequently get into vicious ғɪɢʜᴛs, as is well documented. It is obvious every time the two species coexist across all of Africa. Although lions and hyenas are both sᴋɪʟʟed ʜᴜɴᴛers, they regularly compete for leftovers and sᴛᴇᴀʟ ᴋɪʟʟs from one another.

At the time of this extraordinary occurrence, Louis Le Roux was on vacation at Gharagab in the Kgalagadi National Park. In the very north of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, ᴄʟᴏsᴇ to Union’s End, lies a small, extremely remote self-catering camp known as Gharagab Wilderness Camp. It appears to be in the middle of nowhere, perched on top of a dune over a well-lit waterhole.

Louis begins the video by capturing a lion pride ʜᴜɴᴛing in the savannah. As he tries to fit in, you can hear him whispering softly. A lioness stops moving when she notices a hyena on their ʜᴜɴᴛing grounds as birds chirp in the background. The hyena is almost racing toward the lionesses when he suddenly notices them. He quickly does a U-turn and departs the area. The lions are advancing on him at the same time the hyena runs.

They all proceed, even if one of the lions briefly approaches the intruder near enough to paw at his leg. Five quick cats are at one point shooing the hyena out of their territory. All the cats eventually come to a stop and let the hyena leave alone.
