Mother giraffe tries to protect her baby’s body from the brutal claws of hungry hyenas in the middle of a large golf course

In the heart of the Greater Kruger, amidst a scene of raw emotion and primal struggle, a giraffe fiercely defends her fallen calf from the relentless advance of hyenas.

Field guide Alexandra Olivieri, seasoned by years of bush experience, recounted the harrowing spectacle. She witnessed a mother giraffe, determined beyond reason, fighting tooth and hoof to ward off the hyenas, refusing to abandon her lost offspring.

As Alexandra and her tracker stood witness, a dark omen filled the sky: a swarm of vultures descending upon the scene. Working from Kings Camp in the Timbavati, they had just departed from a hyena den when the ominous sight spurred their curiosity.

Little did they expect the gripping drama that awaited them. Amidst the dust and heat, they stumbled upon the frantic battle, a female giraffe locked in a desperate struggle against the hyena clan for her (potentially) newborn calf.

The ferocity of the giraffe was awe-inspiring, her primal instincts unleashed in a display of sheer determination. Growling and stomping, she held her ground against the encroaching predators, a sight that left Alexandra and her team stunned.

Returning the next morning to survey the aftermath, they found the grim reality: the hyenas had feasted on the carcass, only to be usurped by a male lion. Amidst the chaos of the scavengers’ hierarchy, the lion claimed the remains as his own and dispatched the intruders.

Reflecting on the experience, Alexandra imparted her wisdom: “Follow the cues of nature. The vultures led us to the scene, a lesson in the importance of staying open-minded and patient. In these moments, we are mere observers, allowing the animals to dictate the narrative without interference. It’s a delicate dance of respect and understanding.”
