Geese fiercely attack hungry baboon to protect their nests

Eɢʏᴘᴛian geese vigorously defend their eggs from any potential dangers, like the majority of bird species. However, when a baboon in the Kruger National Park in Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀ set its sights on a delectable goose egg lunch, no amount of harassment from the bird parents could keep the monkey from its reward.

According to Colin Pretorius, a Sales and Marketing Manager at Ngwenya Lodge who witnessed the incident from his office on the southern edge of the reserve, he watched this baboon come bouncing along and realized the geese were in danger. The monkey appeared to have no ғᴇᴀʀ at all. He was part of a troop, but he was the only one that was driven to obtain a taste of the eggs.

Chacma baboons consume a variety of foods, including roots and small animals. Since the primates typically ʜᴜɴᴛ on the ground, nests like this one are especially susceptible.

According to Pretorius, this was his second attempt to try to reach the nest. The breeding site is a terrific place to get a snack because literally hundreds of Eɢʏᴘᴛian geese have come and placed eggs in this area over the last few years. He must have simply determined that this time he wasn’t going to be discouraged, as the attempt was successful. It was an amazing sight to witness.
